Vredestein was established in the Netherlands in 1909, and named after the farm that owner, Emile Louis Constant Schiff bought that same year, and where the production of rubber products first began. From the humble beginnings of tennis balls and shoe heels, Vredestein moved its focus to tyres for cars, bicycles, industry and agriculture. Throughout its history, the company has undergone several mergers, particularly during the oil crisis of the 1970s. Despite all these changes, Vredestein continued to grow, selling in 125 countries by the mid-70s. The late 1990s saw an interesting collaboration with Italian design house Giugiaro Design, a partnership that would see designer Giorgetto Giugiaro nominated for Car Designer of the Century in 1999 for his work on car tyres for Vredestein. In 2009, the business was sold to Apollo Tyres Ltd, an Indian company, and the name was changed to Apollo Vredestein to reflect this takeover.
